Army Red won the All India and South Asia Cup for the third consecutive year on Saturday. The first half was a tightly fought contest, but the Army team always looked to have the edge. Sighs of relief all around as the focus moved back one hundred per cent to the legitimate rugby action at Bombay Gymkhana yesterday.
First up Uzbekistan took on the runners-up of the last two years Chennai Cheetahs. The Cheetahs no doubt influenced by their Kiwi imports treated the crowd to their own version of the ‘Tamil Haka’ before the game. Army Ambala, promoted as Callaghan Cup champions last year and seeded eleven overturned fourth seeds Army Green in what was one of two upset results in the first round of matches at the 76th All India and South Asia Rugby Tournament over the weekend. Their 10-6 victory in a forward oriented game is indicative of the strength in depth of Indian Army rugby and with defending champions Army Red, brimming with internationals, yet to play the civilian club sides present cannot fail to be apprehensive about taking on any of these teams.

First of all, hats off to China. They travelled to Thailand with the tag of heavy favourites and they proved without doubt, to all present that they were worthy of that pre-tournament billing. Not only that, they did it with style, playing fast open rugby and running in some classic seven’s scores. They are blessed throughout their entire twelve woman squad with raw speed, sure handling and bags of confidence and there’s very little answer to that combination in seven a-side rugby.
