It’s all Cricket Club in Singapore; well almost
The headline is not quite right as ASCOBA’s fantastic undefeated season in their debut year, under the guidance of Jock Tiernan, gave them the Guinness Conference title, however in the Premiership and Championship, the men in black and gold rule supreme.
SCC 1sts trounced Wanderers 34-0 in the final league game of the season to follow up the previous weekend’s 35-0 demolition of 2009 league winners Bedok Kings and also finish with an unblemished record; a feat not achieved by any top tier team in Singapore for some considerable time.
The quality and confidence run deep this season at the Cricket Club. The Tankards under the leadership of Rusty Challon clinched the Championship title in style with games to spare, with a resounding 43-8 win over Blacks, while the SCC 3rds edged Blacks to the runners-up spot.
The Growlers with several characters of approaching pensionable age playing major roles finished five points adrift of ASCOBA in the Conference, a fine achievement.
In a small league such as Singapore, one club’s ascendency sadly often spells the reverse for another. Poor old Bedok Kings have had a season they will want to forget in a hurry, with all three teams floundering at the foot of their respective tables and only one win between them all season.
