Indian national team to debut at SCC 7s

The Singapore Cricket Club has revealed its line-up of the 24 teams participating in the upcoming SCC International Rugby 7s 2009 on 7th and 8th November 2009 at the historic Padang.

The Indian national 7s team, the Indian Invaders, will make their debut in the November competition, which is now in its 62nd year. The Invaders will come fresh from the Asian Rugby Sevens Series in Shanghai and will be looking to the SCC 7s tournament to broaden their experience against some of the world’s top Rugby 7s teams.

“The SCC 7s is already world famous in the Rugby 7s community and the addition of the Invaders in the competition will raise the profile of Rugby in the region”, said Mr Peter “Stitch” Hutton, Chairman of the Organising Committee of the SCC 7s.

Defending champions SA Vipers, the South African national development team, will be back for the two-day tournament. They will be joined by three-time champions Ponsonby from New Zealand, five-time winners and current Fijian national 7s winners, Davetalevu, and other national development teams from Kenya, Hong Kong, Scotland and Japan.

“This year’s tournament will be the strongest ever in terms of rugby quality. The SCC 7s has become an essential tournament for many of the world’s top Rugby 7s teams and has long been a stepping stone for many players to achieve rugby greatness. Now that Rugby 7s has been included in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, we will inevitably see even further interest in the SCC 7s. In fact, we have had enquiries from 3 additional national 7s teams in the last week, all wanting to participate in the SCC 7s in 2010”, added Mr Hutton.
